I decided a while ago to store and sync my Onenote-notebooks thru Dropbox. This worked well. Some (old and less important) notebooks were still in Onedrive, others in Dropbox.

There was always the option to choose the location where you wanted to store/save your notebooks. Recently I bought and installed a new, complete MS Office 2016 professional packet on my new laptop to be used during my long term work/travel. In the new Onenote-2016 I cannot choose the location from where I want to store/download/import my notebooks. In short, the notebooks I have in Dropbox can not be imported or opened in the new 2016-version of Onenote. Now, I somehow have two different versions of Onenote on my laptop. One version that opens up when I download and open a Onenote-notebook directly from Dropbox and one version of Onenote from the new installation of MS Office.

They are completely separate! NB: In the newly installed 2016 version of Onenote I now have multiple copies of the same notebooks.

At least they have the same name, but the versions are all slightly different (some are more up to date than others). Is there a simple way to merge these notebooks? Or is it better to just accept the loss and switch to Evernote, after all, because Onenote continues to be a hassle and a disorganized mess, while the whole idea is to get organized!

There is also another very big problem: One notebook refuses to open because 'it is not updated on the computer is was created'. Well, that was my computer back home, while now am at the other side of the planet for at least another half year and I need that notebook for my work! Why doesn't it just open the last version without the latest update? Agreed that syncing has always been a mystery in Onenote from 2010 version through 2016. But, after OneDrive came on the scene MS has actively pushed everyone to the OneDrive Sync in large part because the handling of Sync became a behind the curtain affair if you used the Personal version of OneNote (as opposed to the Business Onenote syncing with Exchange in a office or hosted setting). Part of the push was due to the multi-platform requirements, but all of my longstanding syncing errors went away (except of OneNote UWP which remains a problem child) when I conceded to OpenDrive and moved all my local copies to the OneDrive.

There is some Support documents explaining how to do this move, but I am afraid it doesn't help you if the 2 versions are out of sync. There are some more expansive sorting and move functions available using newer builds of OneNOte 2016 and something like Onetastic, so you might be able to open old and new and manually identify and drag and drop the missing items. Onenote is still so much better than evernote (and free) that it is the better choice in my mind. I migrated all of my evernote to Onenote years ago. If MS can just get the features consistent across platforms and make the Tagging and Printing work I would be a happy camper.
